This year, almost one-quarter of our first-year student group is supported by an industry scholarship or bursary of some kind. It is astounding to think what a difference this kind of support can provide a student, who in many cases may be funding themselves.

Many of our scholarship sponsors are long-term supporters of the College. They understand the importance of supporting education and encouraging educated people to choose agriculture and the horse industry as exciting career paths.

In May of this year, the annual Foundation Cocktail Reception was held in Melbourne with the Hon Jeff Kennett as special guest speaker. This evening allows the Foundation to celebrate and thank our supporters from around the country. Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to spend time with their sponsor as well as increase their own professional network.  Work experience and employment opportunities are often obtained from this important evening.

We are delighted to report that the Scholarship Program has benefitted by a number of new scholarships this year.

A $20,000 scholarship is provided by the Upper Namoi Cotton Growers Association and Cotton Australia. Applicants must be enrolled or intending to enrol in Year 1 of the Agriculture Program and planning to pursue a career in the cotton industry. The recipient is required to undertake the Industry Placement year on an approved (by Marcus Oldham) cotton property in the Upper Namoi region.

Mr and Mrs AlIan and Lyn Davies, whose sons, Rob and Andrew graduated in 2001 and 2002 respectively, have formed the Dalara Foundation and Dalara Pastoral Scholarship. Valued at $10,000, this is offered to applicants enrolled or intending to enrol in Year 1 of the Agriculture Program to study in 2019. The recipient is highly encouraged to undertake the Industry Placement year with Dalara Pastoral.

Dalara Pastoral is a diversified agricultural business with operations at Blackville on the Liverpool Plains, Denman in the Upper Hunter Valley and Walcha in the southern portion of the New England Tableland.

More recently, the Freemasons Foundation of Victoria confirmed their support of an Agricultural Scholarship valued at $5,000. This scholarship will be offered in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and is directed to Victorian students studying their final year at the degree level in Agriculture or Agribusiness.

We are currently working on the final details for the new Lawson Grains Scholarship. This Scholarship will be open to students enrolled or intending to enrol in the Agriculture Program. Valued at $15,000, the Scholarship will be awarded to an applicant with financial needs and who has achieved a high academic standard. The recipient is required to undertake the Industry Placement year with Lawson Grains and the financial value may be split over the two ‘on campus’ years.

A one-year scholarship has been received from the Calvert-Jones Foundation. Valued at $12,000, this Scholarship is open to students enrolled or intending to enrol in Year 1 of the Agriculture Program. David Calvert-Jones studied the Agriculture Program and graduated in 1992. David was the Student President that year.

For the Equine Management Program, the new $10,000 Darren Weir Racing scholarship is open to applicants seeking a career in the Thoroughbred Racing industry. After graduating, the recipient is highly encouraged to undertake a period of employment at Darren Weir Racing. Under a separate agreement, the Darren Weir Racing Bursary valued at $5,000 will be offered to a student, other than the scholarship recipient, partway through the student’s academic year.

To date, one Yulgilbar Foundation Travel Award has been given to Marcus Oldham Postgraduate student, Sophia Hoffenberg, to attend the Crawford Fund Conference in Canberra in August this year.

The closing date for the bulk of our 2019 scholarships is 21 August 2018. Should you require any further information or are interested in supporting a student scholarship please do not hesitate to contact the Foundation Office on 03 5247 2919 or our Scholarship Coordinator on 03 5247 2927.
