Welcome to the second Marcus Oldham Community Update for 2023.

I hope this newsletter finds you well and thriving. We are excited to share some significant developments and achievements from the College Foundation that have taken place recently.

First and foremost, we bid a heartfelt farewell to Ant Baillieu, who has been an integral part of the Foundation since 1993 and served as its Chairman since 1996. Ant’s dedication and vision have been instrumental in numerous notable projects completed during his tenure. It is with great respect and admiration that we have named the new accommodation wing the Baillieu Wing in his honour.

As we bid farewell to Ant, we warmly welcome James Bufton as the new head of the College Foundation. James brings an enormous wealth of knowledge and a deep understanding of the College ethos and you can read more about his appointment below.

Our students have been actively involved in various events this trimester. One remarkable highlight was the successful organisation of the Parent & Student Ball and charity auction which raised funds for their chosen charity, “This Is A Conversation Starter (TIACS).”

Exciting times lie ahead as our students prepare for their international study tours. This year, our first-year students will be heading over to New Zealand, while the final-year students are fortunate to travel to the USA, all thanks to the generous sponsorship from Danny and Kate Thomas from LAWD. Their support has made it possible for 70 students to partake in this exceptional learning experience.

The international tours are an essential component of our course curriculum, and it serves three main purposes: to broaden students’ perspectives, to expose them to real-life situations and businesses, and to enhance their understanding of Australia’s place in the global market. Beyond the applied learning outcomes of the courses, there is a higher purpose for the international tours. Marcus aims to expand students’ horizons and counter insular thinking by exposing them to experiences and approaches outside of Australia. Our goal is to generate greater educational outcomes, producing graduates who are inspired global citizens with an open mind to new ideas and opportunities.

We are incredibly excited about the tour and the opportunities it presents to share the College’s achievements and developments while fostering a sense of togetherness among the Marcus community.

As always, we are grateful for your continued support and engagement with the College. Your contributions and dedication have played an indispensable role in making the College what it is today. We look forward to keeping you updated on future developments hope you enjoy the short collection of good news stories below.

Kind regards

Andrew Baker
